REVA Newsletter
- 28 September 2023 -
A nice REVA Happiness Week is behind us, time for a broad review of some activities and in a nutshell the main messages from the open department meeting (here the presentation), all woven throughout the regular sections of this newsletter. The footage from the REVA Day is not missing either, and we reveal the Secret Heroes!

And we look ahead to next year: take note that our Happiness Week 2024 will take place from Monday September 16 through Friday September 20. The REVA Day will take place on Thursday September 19 or Friday September 20.
But to make the 2024 edition great, we need your input! Will you take a moment and fill out the Happiness Survey about the past Happiness Week?
Wellbeing corner
Our REVA Wellbeing policy is broader than our Hero universe. A few existing and new initiatives that are included within it are planned to be re-worked and developed in the coming months.

Manuals on the doctoral trajectory; staff flow with teaching workload, performance interviews and teaching surveys; and welcoming new employees are existing initiatives but could be improved. If it is not the content that needs updating, it is making sure that it is clearly highlighted and well followed up.

Two new actions are being further developed:
  • the consistent organization of exit interviews, in all circumstances this can be learning for the department
  • in house ombudspeople: a very accessible point of contact and in the first and only instance a listening ear. This in no way replaces the existing official bodies at faculty and central level, at most the ombudspersons inform what channels exist
Surprise and be surprised: that was the purpose of our Secret Hero game during the Happiness Week.
About thirty colleagues showed their most original and surprising side as Secret Hero. Time to thank your Secret Heroes (or perhaps arrange a last-minute surprise). Hopefully all the gifts ended up well, as secret messages on desks, in mailboxes or refrigerators may have been lost.

Drumroll...
Discover the Secret Heroes here.

Nice job everyone, we'll definitely do it again!
REVA Teams
Info on Intranet, in emails, somewhere on a detached SharePoint: it's not obvious to find the answer to your question. It can be done better. With a new REVA Team in Teams, with new underlying SharePoint pages, we want to make all the important department info on general policy, outreach, education and research more user-friendly for everyone.
The medium is the message, because this will also change the communication policy in the department. We aim to reduce mail overload, but at the same time empower all users to actively follow the news on their own terms.
The structural shell of the REVA Team is there, completion is work in progress. To get everyone involved in this story and familiarized enough, several information sessions will be scheduled soon. To be continued soon!
During the REVA Day, things fell somewhat literally into the water so the REVA Pong Finals could not take place on site. With some delay, the pallets were picked up this week, Dries and Ewoud will play the finals (today?). No doubt they will let you know if they need supporters!
Outreach news
The Faculty Committee on Societal Outreach (CMO) has a policy plan with seven strategic objectives designed to strengthen the faculty's social identity. Our REVA outreach committee has hitched the wagon and is working REVA-wise to expand on one objective: opening up academic knowledge to a wide audience.

How?
We are designing a "CMO Menu Card" in which we bundle practical tips on the broad aspect of science communication, ranging from interesting courses or software to advice on what info can be shared and through what existing channels. Something for everyone: you choose what you can use at that moment. We hope to present a first good version of our CMO Menu Card soon.

Want to know more about outreach to our faculty? Discover all the opportunities for community outreach on the website.

And walking the talk:
  • since Monday, our faculty can be found on LinkedIn: discover the news for staff, alumni and professionals. Follow the page and share with your professional circle. Make the net work!
  • during our open department meeting, there was unanimity to set up an REVA LinkedIn page as well. The REVA CMO is making it happen!
  • on Thursday November 23, you can attend an inspiration session on the societal valorization of your research.
Research news
Core facilities - in short: shared research infrastructure that generates revenue - within Ghent University and faculty are hot and happening.
Together with the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences, our department is looking at the development of a core facility. This should make it possible to efficiently share infrastructure and generate additional income that can facilitate our research.

Need advice and support on project applications? Our REVA Scientific Research Committee (CWO) is happy to offer a helping hand. Do not hesitate to contact Team Leader Research Prof. Erik Witvrouw for this purpose!

Change within Team Research: Pieter Van den Berghe will take a leave of absence as of October 1, he will be replaced by Joke Schuermans. All communication for research support will continue through ge37_research@ugent.be.

During Happiness Week you could attend an info session on the PhD Career Hub and Postdoc Talent Management and we also held a Reseach Day.
Missed it or need reference material?
Whether all works deserve a place in the SMAK, MOMA, or somewhere in the attic: that is your own interpretation. The fact is that we were able to indulge our creativity during REV-Arte.
Congratulations to Lisa, Roel, Ewoud, Valentien, Louise and Ellis: their triptych was chosen as the winner and they can put the REVA Cup 2023 on their CV!

Pics or it didn't happen: well, here goes!
